Holding the title of the “world’s liveliest granfondo,” the event returns on July 12th for another edition that will lead participants through the charms of the High North-Eastern Tras-os-Montes. This year, all routes unfold north of the municipalities of Bragança and Vinhais, right in the heart of the Montesinho Natural Park—an integral part of the Meseta Ibérica Transboundary Biosphere Reserve.
Covering 49 km, the minifondo features a straightforward route where the few climbs are easily managed. After leaving Bragança, participants head towards Espinhosela, continuing through Carregosa, Meixedo, Rabal, and Baçal. In Baçal, the local caretos (masked traditional figures) are sure to make themselves heard and noticed. The return to the city follows a nearly flat path.
The mediofondo option is more demanding, yet the 88 km course shouldn't pose significant issues. The climbs of Soeira, Fresulfe, and França are no longer than 3,000 metres, with average gradients ranging between 5% and 7.5%. Throughout much of the route, the dense nature is worth contemplating, even when your breath struggles to keep up.
Unsurprisingly, the greatest challenge awaits the granfondo participants, who will face 123 km. Before reaching Vinhais, the Vila Verde ramp lies ahead. However, it is during the ascent to the Serra da Coroa, passing through Lagarelhos, that the toughest difficulties will be felt. As one of the 12 highest points in Portugal (1,272 m), the descent to Couço only begins once riders have reached an altitude of 1,132 metres.
From there, 69 km remain until Bragança. To reach Couço, right on the border with Spain, a 2,500-metre climb at 8% is required. The "trip" to França will be fast, and once that final hurdle is cleared, the path continues smoothly to the finish line located on Rua D. Sancho I.
Come and join us for an adventure through the charms of Trás-os-Montes.
