Returning to the dams, Cabreira and the 'walls'.

There are a couple of features that make the Reconco Gerês Granfondo unique: it takes place in the only protected area with National Park status, and it is the oldest granfondo in Portugal. The thirteenth edition will take place on 7 June 2026, marking a return to the beautiful Cabreira dams and the challenging climbs of Pincães (Gerês) and Ermida (Amarela).

Those who opt for the shorter distance (the minifondo) will face a 56 km route of medium difficulty. The climb from the Caniçada dam to Cerdeirinhas is straightforward, and the route from there to Salamonde, nestled between the Cabreira and Gerês mountains, is all downhill. However, you will miss the passages through Fafião and the ascent of the 'wall' of Ermida. This 3 km stretch has an average gradient of 6.5%, but the first thousand metres are an arduous 11.8%.

This UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve will appear even more impressive to participants who opt for the 89 km mediofondo. The Ermal reservoir and the Cabreira mountains are among the itinerary, followed by Salamonde, which is already at the foot of the slope that will lead the granfondo participants to the Ermida ramp, the last major challenge of this route.

Continuing through the territories of Vieira do Minho and Terras de Bouro, the adventure becomes even more rewarding (and demanding!) for those who take on the granfondo challenge. This 130 km route is marked by breathtaking landscapes and, in addition to the places already mentioned, leads to the Venda Nova dam. Located in the transition zone between Minho and Trás-os-Montes, where the Cávado and Rabagão rivers converge, this is where participants will be inspired to tackle the 'walls' of Pincães (2 km/10.7%) and Ermida.
